Thursday 1 February 2024, Oxford: People have ridden two million miles – and counting – in Oxford on the public hire Voi e-scooters since the scheme launched in the city in 2020.
The figures have been released as Voi celebrates three years of operation in the city.
Since the e-scooter trial was launched in September 2020, public hire e-scooters have become an important addition to transport in Oxford, with just over 86,000 people now signed up to Voi, using them to commute to work and education.
E-scooters are a much greener way to travel and since their introduction in Oxford have replaced over 346,000 car journeys, clocking up over two million miles and reducing CO2 emissions in the city by an estimated 136 tonnes, the equivalent of that produced by 11 car trips around the world.
Jack Samler, Voi Regional General Manager UK, Ireland and France, said: “Our Oxford trial has grown in popularity, with more and more people choosing to use scooters for short trips to work, for socialising, to go to the shops or appointments and to get to university.
“Since the scheme was launched in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council, we’ve increased the number of scooters and expanded the scheme so more people can benefit from using e-scooters across a wider area, providing a new, easy-to-use and affordable means of Transport.”
Cllr Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Transport Management said: “Getting from home – or the school run - to work, to the station, popping to the shops, seeing friends and family socially, even going to appointments and meetings is made very easy using the e-scooters.
“The continued impressive growth in public hire e-scooter use in the city is fantastic. It really shows how well they are working for people, and Voi’s commitment to delivering an excellent service.
“Rebalancing our approaches to transport to help future proof Oxford by finding different sustainable options for short trips across our busy city is imperative and I am proud we have Voi so dedicated to helping us realize this.”
