People in Portsmouth have taken 1 million trips on rental e-scooters as Voi marks three years of operation in the city.
Since the e-scooter trial was launched in March 2021, public hire e-scooters have become an important addition to transport in the city, with just over 82,000 people in Portsmouth now signed up to Voi, using them to commute to work and education.
Safety is Voi’s top priority and each year the company arranges safe scooter riding sessions both in person and online. The next in-person scooter skills training event in Portsmouth is on Saturday 11 May, 10am - 2pm at the Mountbatten Centre tennis courts.
All participants will be given a free helmet and free riding credits.
People can sign up to a free 20-minute session here.
E-scooters are a much greener way to travel and since their introduction in Portsmouth have replaced over 430,000 car journeys, clocking up over 1.4 million miles and reducing CO2 emissions in the city by an estimated 184 tonnes.
James Bolton, General Manager, Voi UK, said: “Our Portsmouth trial has grown in popularity, with more and more people choosing to use scooters for short trips to work, for socialising, to go to the shops, appointments and education.
“Since the scheme was launched in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, we’ve worked in partnership to deliver an excellent service so that people can benefit from an easy-to-use and affordable means of transport.”
Online ‘Ride Safe’ webinars which cover key aspects of safely riding a Voi e-scooter, from how to start a ride, traffic rules, road riding etiquette, and how to park without causing an obstruction for pedestrians, run monthly from 17 April until 12 December 2024.
They can be booked here and anyone completing one of them will get 30 minutes of free riding credits.
People can also take part in Voi’s Ride Safe Academy, an online training school they can complete in their own time, available here.
As part of Voi’s mission to provide safe, sustainable and reliable micromobility for all, Voi riders can take advantage of Voi for All discounts which provide discounted travel to people on low incomes, disabled people and people over 65, to help with the cost of living.
