Oxford, 19 October 2023: Oxford’s provider of shared e-scooters, Voi, has launched its latest e-scooter across the city.
The new model offers upgraded features for a better user experience to encourage even more people to get around the city in an environmentally friendly way.
The new top-of-the-range hi-tech ‘Voiager 5’ or ‘V5’ scooters have a bigger front wheel, with a shock absorption system and deep tyre tread for increased safety and smoother ride on bumpy road surfaces.
Following feedback from riders, the handlebars and dashboard are designed to be easier to use for people with smaller hands – typically women – with the throttle, brakes and bell easier to reach.
A central integrated phone holder and indicators which switch off automatically after turning so riders don’t have to lower their gaze to deactivate them, are also part of the updated dashboard.
The ‘V5’ is the company’s most sustainable scooter, made from 30% recycled materials with many of the scooters’ components reusable or recyclable. Each scooter has been designed to last five years.
Since the e-scooter trial was launched in partnership with Voi in February 2021, public hire e-scooters have become an important addition to transport in the city, with just over 79,000 people in Oxford now signed up to Voi, using e-scooters and e-bikes to commute to work and education.
They are a much greener way to travel and since their introduction in Oxford have replaced over 300,000 car journeys, clocking up over 1.7 million miles and reducing CO2 emissions in the city by an estimated 117 tonnes.
Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Transport Management said: “Improving how we can keep moving around the city is a priority for us and we are already enjoying the popular and positive use of the trial e-scooters around Oxford. I continue to be impressed with Voi’s dedication to constantly striving for even better attainments in how the e-scooters work, helping ensure the scooters are more efficient and riders are using them more safely.”
Jack Samler, Voi general manager UK, Ireland and France, said: “We’re delighted to roll out our very latest e-scooter to people in Oxford who can now benefit from a safe, convenient, environmentally friendly and affordable way to get around the city 24 hours a day.”
As part of Voi’s mission to provide safe, sustainable and reliable micromobility for all, Voi riders can take advantage of Voi for All discounts which provide discounted travel to people on low incomes, including refugees and asylum seekers, disabled people and people over 65, to help with the cost of living.
