Friday 17 November 2023, UK: Voi, the UK’s leading micromobility operator, is supporting Road Safety Week 2023 by encouraging its riders to stay safe this winter.

From 19-25 November, road safety charity Brake holds its annual week of road safety awareness-raising.

Voi will be reminding riders to ride safely by sharing advice from Brake as well as its own top tips for safe and considerate e-scooter riding across its channels.

Voi’s top tips for riding safely and sustainably this winter include:

  1. Turn on the ‘Beginner’s mode’. Users can turn on the ‘Beginner’s mode’, particularly if they are first-time riders, for a slower ride which automatically reduces the maximum speed to 10mph
  2. See and be seen when riding a Voi. Voi’s e-scooters and e-bikes are equipped with lights and built-in reflectors Voi advises users to stay warm and wear additional reflective clothing or a helmet light during the winter period
  3. Remember to wear a helmet. From time to time, Voi gives away free helmets at events
  4. Riders should keep their eyes on the road, especially if the roads are slippery or icy. Users are advised to slow down and to avoid taking abrupt turns.

Besides regular in-app messages, riders can read more on the top tips to keep safe on Voi’s winter Safety page.
To encourage safer riding during the winter months, Voi is also hosting a free safety webinar on Thursday 7 December 2023.  The hour-long webinar will cover all aspects of safely riding a Voi e-scooter, from wearing a helmet, to the correct position in the road and how to park without causing an obstruction for pedestrians. Those who register and attend will receive 30 free minutes for use on a Voi e-scooter.

Voi’s geofencing technology creates NoRide, SlowRide and Mandatory Parking Zones, ensuring riders, pedestrians and other roads are kept safe. A commitment to a year-round service, with a comprehensive safety vehicle and regular inspections, means riders can have peace of mind for a safe and reliable experience this winter.

Matthew Pencharz, Voi Head of Public Policy, UK, Ireland and France, said:

“Safety is at the forefront of everything we do at Voi. Everyone who signs up to Voi has to complete a short in app safety briefing before they can start their first ride. We also have online training on our website and send out safety tips to our riders regularly.

“We know that the majority of e-scooter riders do ride safely and responsibly but Brake's Road Safety Week gives us an additional opportunity to encourage riders to be more aware and considerate of winter riding conditions in order to enjoy the fun side of this environmentally friendly form of transport.”

The popularity of Voi has grown substantially since launching in the UK just over three years ago, with more than 31 million rides and replacing nearly 10.8m short car journeys in the 14 towns and cities where it operates.

Voi closely monitors its operations and irresponsible or unsafe use is enforced with user bans. Incidents of bad riding practices are well managed and 0.02% of total Voi account holders (UK-wide) have been blocked.

Unsafe riding or inappropriate use of Voi e-scooters can be reported to report.voi.com via the Voi app or website.
