Volvo Car USA reported sales of 34,228 vehicles for the second quarter of the year, up 9 percent year over year, driven by the recovery of sales of XC60 and XC90. Electrified vehicles, defined as vehicles with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain, accounted for 24.1 percent of total U.S. sales in the quarter. Sales of electrified sales declined 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year, as the company continues to balance customer demand for the full range of powertrains across the U.S. market.

The overall market still remains impacted by low customer sentiment, increased competition in the SUV segment and a slower than expected recovery in sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars post subsidy removal.

Second quarter highlights:

  • Sales increased two straight months in the second quarter, reflecting the positive impact of actions taken to support retailers in driving business to their stores.
  • The award-winning XC90 and best-selling XC60 both delivered a sharp double-digit increase for the second quarter compared to the same period last year.
  • Certified pre-owned sales continued their positive momentum, increasing 38% year over year in the second quarter, with fully electric certified pre-owned sales surging 183% compared with the second quarter of last year.
  • Volvo Cars unveiled the all‑new EX60 in North America for the first time in May, debuting the highly-anticipated model in New York City and officially opened orders for U.S. customers.

“Our focus remains on meeting the needs of our U.S. customers no matter where they are in their electrification journey through a strong portfolio of premium SUVs,” said Luis Rezende, President, Volvo Car Americas. “We are living in a dynamic, changing world, and through listening to both consumers and our retailer partners, we're positioning Volvo Cars with the right products, offers and experience to meet the needs of U.S. drivers."
