2018 Exhibitions Announced for Wanås Konst – The Wanås Foundation
In 2018, the sculpture park Wanås Konst in Sweden presents an artist-curated folk art museum, large-scale installations, a social sculpture, and investigations of time and space through contemporary choreography. Internationally acclaimed Chiharu Shiota (JP/DE), and Katarina Löfström (SE) produce new artworks, Richard Johansson’s (SE) rolling Folk Art Museum stops at the Art Gallery, and legendary Danish artist Poul Gernes’ social sculpture finds a place in the sculpture park thanks to a donation. Within the program Wanås Konst Live Art, world-renowned choreographer Xavier Le Roy (FR) collaborates with Scarlet Yu (HK) on site. The 2018 program exhibits the qualities that has characterized the art projects at Wanås since the start 30 years ago – sculpture in the landscape and new artworks specially produced for the location. The artists explore the concept of sculpture and find new exhibition sites for their works. The Art Gallery and indoor installations will open March 30, 2018; the sculpture park is open daily all year round. Welcome!

Spring – Richard Johansson
Spring at Wanås Konst starts on March 30, in conjunction with local art tour Konstrundan, with the exhibition Folk Art Museum, a traveling museum and artwork by artist Richard Johansson, who is both originator and museum director. For several years, Johansson has collected paintings, sculptures, and objects that can be classified as folk art. Folk art has followed him since his childhood and functions as an affectionate source of inspiration for his entire artistic oeuvre. This spring, the project will move onward and park at Wanås. The work consists of a rolling covered wagon, sculpted by the artist, with a collection of folk art. In addition, based on an open call folk art will be shown in the Art Gallery in an exhibition curated by the artist.

Chiharu Shiota and Katarina Löfström
Two exhibitions and a special project kick off summer at Wanås Konst on May 6. Chiharu Shiota (JP/DE) and Katarina Löfström are creating separate presentations, with artworks both indoors and out in the landscape. In different ways, the artists combine the subtle reflections and observations with the mesmerizing and large-scale. Katarina Löfström works with visual abstractions that might originate in fireworks or in visualizing data. She often returns to her relationship to nature, and at Wanås, she is working with an artwork that is impacted by light and wind and that makes the forest dissolve. Chiharu Shiota weaves installations with thread to look like sculptural drawings. With lines as a starting point, she develops a sculpture in a new material for Wanås Konst. In her art, she returns to a feeling of displacement, and at Wanås she places house shapes, the symbol for ‘home’, in the center. The exhibit corresponds with a presentation of Chiharu Shiota at the Göteborg Museum of Art, and together both places offer a unique opportunity to gain insight into a notable oeuvre.
Poul Gernes, special project
Parallel to the exhibitions by Katarina Löfström and Chiharu Shiota is the opening of a special project with Poul Gernes (DK), which takes as a starting point a sketch from 1967 for a work intended for public space. The sculpture was realized for the first time in 2016 at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark, in conjunction with a solo exhibition of the artist. Gernes’ sketch shows a variety of people occupying spaces on a large-scale pyramid that becomes a lively meeting place. The artist described his pyramid as a place “where people would be able to hang out” in accordance with his thoughts about the social role of art. At Wanås, the pyramid gains a permanent residence after a donation by Klara Karolines Fond, founded by Aase and Poul Gernes. Poul Gernes (1925-1996) was born in Denmark but lived in Munka Ljungby in Skåne, Sweden, for 30 years, and a large portion of his artworks originated in Skåne. He has influenced many young artists through his work with color experiments and collective and interactive art.

Summer II – Xavier Le Roy and Scarlet Yu
In July and August, Wanås Konst welcomes Xavier Le Roy in collaboration with Scarlet Yu as they investigate time, space, and sculpture on site. Le Roy is one of the foremost names in choreography. Le Roy and Yu have collaborated together for the Venice Biennale 2015, Kaldor Public Art Projects – Sydney 2015, Centre Pompidou Paris 2016, for The Unfaithful Replica at CA2M – Madrid 2016 and most recently Skulptur Projekt Münster 2017. Since 2016, Wanås Konst has been working with a long-term investment in Live Art. The program is developed with affiliate curator Rachel Tess. Wanås Konst – Center for Art and Education, presents and communicates contemporary art that challenges and redefines society, working outside in the landscape around Wanås in Skåne, southern Sweden. The permanent collection in the sculpture park is complemented with a program of temporary exhibitions, both outdoors and in the Art Gallery, and events such as guided tours, artists’ talks, performances and workshops engaging a wide audience. Wanås Konst produces site-specific international art and learning in an innovative and accessible way.
The collection in the sculpture park has 70 permanent works, created specifically for The Wanås Foundation – Wanås Konst by artists such as Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono and Robert Wilson et al. The sculpture park has approximately 75 000 visitors per year and 8000 children take part in educational activities.
Wanås Konst is run by The Wanås Foundation, a non-profit foundation created in 1994, in Östra Göinge municipality, in the South of Sweden, 1.5 h from Copenhagen, Denmark. Founding Director Marika Wachtmeister initiated the art projects at Wanås in 1987. Since 2011 the foundation is led by Elisabeth Millqvist and Mattias Givell. Wanås Konst is part self-financed, part supported by state, regional and municipal funding, as well as by private foundations and sponsors.
Wanås is a place in the world where art, nature and history meet. Wanås consist of a medieval castle, an organic farm, a scenic sculpture park and art center in southern Sweden as well as the newly opened Wanås Restaurant Hotel.
