Autumn Garden & Nature Walks at Wave Hill and on the Palisades

Report this content

With a welcome chill in the crisp fall air and a new palette painting the landscape, relish the great outdoors with a new season of Wave Hill garden and nature walks.  Starting in October, special offsite hikes and excursions explore the Palisades, the rock cliffs across the Hudson that set the stage for public programs —and a new exhibition in Glyndor Gallery.

Free Garden Highlights Walks every Sunday focus on seasonal favorites at Wave Hill. As the leaves start to fall, take a tour with Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day on a Plant “Survivor” Walk: Going to Seed as he explains how squirrels, jays and even ants assist with seed distribution and the regeneration of plants. On the Fall Foliage Walk, he shares his favorite trees and shrubs in their beautiful fall shades. If you’d like to bring home some fall favorites of your own, be sure not to miss our Best Bets at the Plant Sale: Assistant Director of Public Programs Laurel Rimmer offers a personal tour of our fabulous plant sale, highlighting rare plants, superior cultivars and top-notch performers for your home garden! On History Walks, historian and Wave Hill Garden Guide Deirdre LaPorte showcases the life of former Wave Hill owner George W. Perkins and his pivotal role in preserving the Palisades.

Nature walks this season provide fun for the whole family! For the early birds, take flight with naturalist Gabriel Willow on Birding Walks at Wave Hill. Willow offers his extensive knowledge of native and migrating bird species and their behaviors.  Crawl about the grounds on an Insect Walk with naturalist Paul Keim. Check the website for age recommendations.

Finally, join us for new events offsite this fall. Be prepared to be awed by the centuries-old trees, waterfalls and views of the Hudson as naturalist and Greenbrook Sanctuary Director Sandra Bonardi takes you on a tour of the 165-acre refuge. Hike along Millionaires’ Row on the Palisades with Historic Interpreter Eric Nelsen and Trail Crew Supervisor and Educator Christina Fehre of the Palisades Interstate Park–NJ Section. More than 400 feet above the Hudson River, explore the cliffs where tumbled remains of a dozen or so estates line the lonely precipice. Become a Wave Hill Member and join us on an exclusive Members’ Day Trip, A Day in the Shawangunks, Gardens of New Paltz
