Banish winter boredom! Fill the spring season with fascinating lessons in gardening, woodworking and crafts! Explore the world of woodworking at the Wood-Turning Demonstration and the Green-Roof Birdhouse Workshop. Learn the secrets of orchid cultivation. Indulge your interest in indoor gardening, too, at programs on terrarium-making and Kokedama.

Woodworking & Crafts

Wood-Turning Demonstrations, SAT & SUN, April 25 & 26, 11AM–3PM

In celebration of Arbor Week, artist Chris Busak presents a woodturning demonstration in The Shop. A limited collection of bowls turned from our precious copper beech tree will be available for purchase. Demonstration is free with admission to the grounds. Arbor Weekend event.

Green-Roof Birdhouse Workshop, SUN, May 3, 10AM–4PM

Sharpen both your woodworking and gardening skills as you construct and plant a birdhouse with a rooftop of live succulent plants. Master carpenter and Director of Facilities Frank Perrone and Assistant Director of Public Programs Laurel Rimmerprovide instruction and inspiration in this hands-on workshop. No previous carpentry experience required. Reservations required. $65/$50 Wave Hill Member per project. Ages 12 and older welcome with an adult.

Gardening Workshops

Terrarium Workshop, SAT, March 14, 2–3:30PM

Don't have a garden or greenhouse? Tiny ferns and other tropical plants thrive in the humid conditions of an enclosed glass jar as if in their own miniature greenhouse. Design and plant your own fanciful landscape in a glass jar with a selection of diminutive plants, perfect for home or office. Assistant Director of Public Programs Laurel Rimmer provides plants, materials and technical assistance. Registration required. $50/$35 Wave Hill Member per project. Ages eight and older welcome with an adult.

Orchid Culture—A Close-up Look, SAT, March 21, 11AM–Noon

If you have successfully grown one or more orchids and want to expand your understanding of these wonderful plants, then this program, led by orchid expert Isabel Lopatin, is for you! Find out how to anticipate the needs of a plant by observing its morphology, or plant structure.  Free with admission to the grounds.

Meet the Grower: Orchid Expert Isabel Lopatin, SAT, March 21, 1–3PM

Drop by The Shop at Wave Hill to chat with orchid grower Isabel Lopatin, who shares successful techniques for selecting and growing a variety of orchids. Then purchase your own that will thrive in your home. Come early for an orchid-inspired Family Art Project from 10AM to 1PM. Free with admission to the grounds.

Kokedama Workshop, SAT, March 28, 2-3:30PM

Originating in Japan, Kokedama are living plant and moss balls bound up with string. Choose from a variety of houseplants and design your own Kokedama under the guidance of Anna Macoby, a gardener and florist from Australia, now living in Brooklyn. Simple to care for, these hanging plants bring a new style of indoor gardening to your home. $40/$30 Wave Hill Member per project. Registration required. Ages ten and older welcome with an adult.
