Three Grand October Weekends Celebrate Autumn at Wave Hill

This fall, Wave Hill celebrates the season with a run of three grand weekends celebrating the depth and range of our connections to nature. In early October, Enchanted Wave Hill Weekend brings magic to the garden with family art and entrancing storytelling enlivened by the captivating sounds of the New Thread Saxophone Quartet. Cool autumn breezes inspire Wings over Wave Hill on Columbus Day weekend, with a special focus on birds of prey. The month comes to a climax on a truly buzz-worthy Honey Weekend, with activities ranging from artisanal honey-tasting and candle-making, to a “Be a Bee” Family Art Project. All events listed here are free with admission unless otherwise noted.

Enchanted Wave Hill Weekend Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 3, 4

Magical Wands and Fairy Houses, Saturday & Sunday,10AM-1PM

Make a wand of ribbons to twirl through the autumn air and then be captivated by Rama Mandel’s delightful fairy stories. Venture into the woodlands to create your own tiny, fairy-sized dwelling using found sticks, leaves and bark—and behold the magic, all enlivened by the captivating sounds of the New Thread Quartet.

Enchantment in The Shop at Wave Hill, 11AM‒4PM

The Pamela Company’s enchanting wood nymph, leaf and flower fairy tutus and wings are a charming costume for young and old this fall. The designer will be on hand to help you make the perfect choice.

Wings over Wave Hill Weekend Saturday through Monday, Oct. 10, 11 & 12

Family Art Project: Sailing the Sky, Saturday & Sunday,10AM-1PM

Look for migrating hawks soaring, circling and gliding above the Hudson River. Stretch your arms and sail across the grassy lawns. Then, fashion a sailing hawk glider or feathery windsock for the autumn breezes. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

Early Morning Bird Walk, Saturday, 8AM

Join naturalist Gabriel Willow on a special, early-morning walk to spot birds in the gardens and woodlands, as well as the skies above Wave Hill. An amazing diversity of birds is active on the grounds before the gates open to the public. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Registration required.

Birding, Sunday, 9:30AM

Naturalist Gabriel Willow contributes his extensive knowledge of bird species and their behaviors on these captivating walks. Wave Hill’s garden setting overlooking the Hudson River flyway provides the perfect habitat for native and migrating birds. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Birders of all levels welcome! Severe weather cancels. Registration recommended. (NYC Audubon Members enjoy two-for-one admission.)

Falconry Presentation: Skyhunters in Flight, Monday, 1PM

Watch hawks, falcons and owls sharpen their hunting skills during an exciting outdoor flight demonstration with master falconer Brian Bradley of New Paltz, NY. Hear about the ancient sport of falconry and see live raptors from around the world. Ages eight and older welcome with an adult.

 

Honey Weekend Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 17, 18

Family Art Project: Be a Bee, Saturday & Sunday, 10AM-1PM

Join us for this classic Family Art Project. Outfit yourself with wings, antennae, a pollen cup and a kazoo to hum with. Buzz around in a hive of six-sided cells and forage in the flowers. Join in a bee parade and do a bee dance in a cardboard hive. Parade at 12:30PM, weather permitting.

Honey Extraction Demonstration, Saturday & Sunday,12:30, 1:30, 2:30PM

How do bees make honey?How do we collect it?Help us extract and bottle honey from our resident honeybees.

Hives and Honey Information Station, Saturday & Sunday,1−3PM

Try on beekeeping gear, peek inside an empty hive and learn fascinating facts about honeybees.

Candle-Making Workshop, Saturday & Sunday,11AM−3PM

Beeswax has been used for centuries in art, woodworking and in religious ceremonies. Try your hand at creating an assortment of beeswax candles to take home and enjoy. Materials fee: $20/$15 Wave Hill Member per kit, which includes enough to make several candles.

In The Shop: Honey Tastings, Saturday,11AM−4PM

You’ll be amazed at the complex flavors of different varieties of honey! Sample a few, then purchase your favorite to take home. Today, taste local New York City artisanal honey by apiary Honey Gramz, and sample Mee Beauty’s all-natural lip balms, face creams and lotions, infused with Honey Gramz seasonal honey.

In The Shop: Honey Tastings, Sunday,11AM−4PM

You’ll be amazed at the complex flavors of different varieties of honey! Sample a few, then purchase your favorite to take home. Today, Seaway Trail Honey offers samples of seasonal honey. Taste how the flavor changes with the flowers and seasons—from fresh and delicate spring varieties to robust fall flavors. Seaway Trail’s Early Summer Reserve Honey recently won the Black Jar Award at the Eastern Apicultural Society honey show.
