Nova Jiang and Cameron Rowland Explore Space and Site Specificity

In the sixth season of the Sunroom Project at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, New York-area artists create a new body of work or site-specific project for a solo exhibition. Joining the growing list of artists who have found inspiration in Wave Hill’s breathtaking gardens, sweeping vistas and rich history, are Nova Jiang and Cameron Rowland, also Wave Hill 2012 Van Lier Visual Artist Fellows.

Both artists respond to the space of the gallery and the site of Wave Hill. Nova Jiang is concerned with fostering a sense of community, often creating situations that allow people to interact in unexpected ways as she explores evolving definitions of public space. Landscape Abbreviated is a playful, kinetic maze in the Sun Porch that combines art, technology and garden design. The work acts as a simple intervention that makes the experience of space dynamic and unpredictable. Cameron Rowland’s work creates a platform for critical dialogue about shared realities. For Those, he scrutinizes the boundaries of the exhibition space, treating the Sunroom, Glyndor House and Wave Hill as part of his installation, rather than simply its site. His project considers nearby public housing development Marble Hill Houses in relation to Wave Hill and its history as a private estate. Drawing on the perception of these sites as inhabiting two different worlds, Rowland contemplates the economic segregation of these two neighborhoods and their perceived social values.

The 2012 season of the Sunroom Project Space concludes with installations by Crystal Z. Campbell (September 1‒October 14), Yeon Ji Yoo (September 1‒October 14) and Gail Biederman (October 20‒December 2).

The Sunroom Project Space contributes significantly to the professional advancement of each exhibiting artist. In addition, the Van Lier Visual Artist Fellowship, funded by the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust, provides an opportunity for two young artists to develop the skills and professional credentials needed to establish a successful career as visual artists.

Organized by Assistant Curator Gabriel de Guzman, the Sunroom Project Space provides an opportunity for New York-area emerging artists to exhibit in a site-specific solo show.

The Sunroom Project Space is supported by the Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation and The New York Community Trust. Additional support for the Visual Arts Program is provided by the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc., Dedalus Foundation, Inc., and by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Sustaining support for Wave Hill is provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
