Wave Hill Winter Workspace 2014
WAVE HILL WINTER WORKSPACE 2014 Contemporary artists draw inspiration from stunning public garden
Open Studios February 15 and March 30, 1–3PM
Bronx, NY December 18, 2013― For the fifth year, Glyndor Gallery transforms into studios for New York-area artists to work in the context of the garden and explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists will share their studio practice with the public through workshops offered on select days from January through March and at Open Studios, held at the end of each session. Children 12 and older are welcome to join workshops if accompanied by an adult.
Session 1: January 2 – February 16, 2014
Aron Louis Cohen uses basic modes of production to transform organic material into sculptural forms. Cheryl Molnar’s painted collage works investigate landscape and human manipulation of nature, as influenced by her visits to botanical gardens, arboreta and parks. Dana Levy creates vignettes with moving images of Wave Hill’s grounds and buildings. Media artist Jan Mun works with art, technology and science to create social sculptures. Jessica Lagunas’ multi-media practice focuses on the obsessions of women, such as body image, beauty and aging. Evie McKenna photographs vernacular gardens that explore the interaction of organic elements and the built environment.
Session 2: February 18 – March 30, 2014
Portuguese artist Cristina Ataide’s drawings, sculptures and photographs draw associations between landscape and the human body. Whitney Artell designs and fabricates textiles that examine the intersection of the manmade and the natural in the urban environment. Brandon Neubauer incorporates video projection, photographs and recorded sound to create a portrait of a site, engaging time, optical phenomena, topography and found objects. He will be creating his on-site installation for the Sunroom Project Space, opening April 8, 2014. Shanti Grumbine creates intricate paper cuttings from newsprint, excising text and cutting patterns into the accompanying photos to create lacy patterns that challenge the way society informs itself.
Winter Workspace Session 2 welcomes 2014 Van Lier Visual Artist Fellows
Session 2 will include Van Lier Visual Artist Fellows Tammy Nguyen and Alexandra Phillips, who will develop work for their upcoming solo exhibitions in the Sunroom Project Space in fall 2014. Nguyen’s paintings and handmade books tell stories based on contradictions in cultural beliefs, using plant and animal forms. Phillips creates sculpture out of cast-off material from the urban environment, which she reworks into forms that echo traditional sculpture, allowing the viewer to experience the material in a new way.
