Waystream climate-compensates its entire production
Press release 30 June 2022
Waystream AB has calculated the climate effect its products have on society through a collaboration with ClimatePartner and, as of 1 July 2022, all production of access switches will be climate neutral.
“Sustainability has become one of the biggest and most important societal issues of our time, and we, both as individuals and companies, have a significant impact on future generations. That is why we at Waystream take pleasure in stepping up at the forefront of our industry when it comes to climate-compensating our production as part of our long-term goal of becoming completely climate neutral. Our industry is growing rapidly due to the great demand in society. Rapid technological development is taking place, and as such it is of the utmost importance that we consider environmental aspects and electricity consumption in our products,” says Fredrik Lundberg, CEO of Waystream and continues:
“As far as I am aware, it is completely unique to climate-compensate the products in our industry. We have assisted ClimatePartner in counting hundreds of different components and details in our production chain, and we now know our exact carbon dioxide emissions and can compensate for these with another project."
Waystream has integrated the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its sustainability agenda, in those areas in which the company sees it can contribute.
The SDGs are a common global ambition to protect the planet and create prosperity for all. Waystream has now reported all greenhouse gas emissions for its production of access switches and has thereby been able to create a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for all access switches produced. ClimatePartner has calculated the emissions from raw materials, logistics, packaging, and waste management according to the standard Cradle-to-Gate plus End-of-life method, and in doing so produced PCF figures for Waystream's 7000 and 8000 series.
Compensation via a climate project
Waystream will compensate its carbon dioxide emissions from 1 July, and for the remainder of 2022, by supporting a climate project certified according to international standards: Wind Power in North-east Brazil, www.climatepartner.com/17894-2205-1001.
“The project we have chosen for climate compensation clearly lowers greenhouse gases by replacing climate-damaging technology with environmentally friendly alternatives, and in this case can reduce the need for fossil-based energy. Which projects we choose in 2023, and in the future, will be decided at a later time,” says Fredrik Lundberg.
“Compensating our greenhouse or carbon dioxide emissions is an important part of our environmental work, but certainly not the only one. In our day-to-day work, we have worked for some time to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions as much as possible, and will continue to do so moving forward. Waystream's products are classified as electronics, and as such are automatically included in the EU's recycling system and have WEEE markings. This means that the cost of recycling each Waystream product has already been paid when it leaves our warehouse, ”says Fredrik Lundberg, and continues:
“We design our products so that they can be upgraded over time, and consequently extend their life. This allows our customers to use our products longer than is "normal" in the industry, and thereby reduce the resource burden for our planet. We have also reduced package sizes and made certain accessories order items instead of being sent automatically with each package. This not only reduces the amount of waste but also the environmental impact of manufacturing and transportation. We have also moved almost 80 per cent of our production from Asia to Sweden, which greatly reduces our need for global transportation from factory to warehouse.”
