Mapps to Apps - One of the new paradigms of geospatial intelligence

Report this content

Geospatial Intelligence (GeoInt) is quickly becoming part of every day operations in both defence and the intelligence world. Every piece of data, every image and every bit of intelligence has spatial coordinates and can be put on a map. Most defence agencies around the world are currently working on integrating all parts of their data infrastructure and intelligence into one easily accessible and interoperable picture, with geo information at the core of every data set, situational awareness concept or in-theatre operational picture.

Delivering users online on demand information and analysis is another top priority for the allied forces around the world. Maps to apps is no longer a fancy concept, but a reality in many geo organisations in defence and intelligence. From operations in Lybia to the London 2012 Olympic planning committee, everyone is working on strategies and solutions for effective information dissemination and sharing.

Cloud computing, human geography and broadened data analysis are going to change the way geospatial intelligence works forever. No longer will geo be the department responsible for producing maps and giving them to users upon request. Geospatial intelligence is truly becoming the core of every decision in-theatre, in anti-terrorist operations and in day-to-day intelligence work of every country around the world.

All these points and more will be discussed at the geospatial communities annual get together - Defence Geospatial Intelligence (DGI) is Europe's largest and most international annual gathering dedicated to the high-level discussion of the importance and the major challenges of the use of geospatial intelligence in both defence and national security operations. With over 650 attendees, 42 sponsors, 60 speakers and 50 case study presentations, DGI 2011 in January proved once again be, the integral meeting place for GIS professionals and technology providers.

DGI 2012 will take place on 23 - 26 January 2012 at the QEII Conference Centre, Westminster, London.

What's new at Defence Geospatial Intelligence 2012?

Every year we bring the new themes, topics and challenges to the top of our agenda. We spend months finding what new solutions, strategies and topics are on the agendas of our delegates, to bring them case studies, solutions and products they need to achieve their goals. This year the key new developments at DGI 2012 include:

  • Maps to Apps – Focused on delivering online on demand and on time data, information and analysis to each user in-theatre and in HQ
  • GIS Architecture & Mission Management -  Focus on the challenges GIS professionals have when designing and modifying their systems and discussing the practical realities of providing information and managing data on a day-to-day basis

  • GIS in C4ISR – For the first time ever DGI is aiming to cover the GIS strategies and tools used within C4ISR - The big strategic capabilities based on GIS or involving GIS.
  • Operational Focus -  DGI is moving away from theory into practical operational case studies, that will focus on current and latest GIS strategies from war theatres around the globe
  • Human Geography – using not only military force, but intelligence about the local people has proven to be one of the most effective new strategies in Afghanistan, Lybia and many other in-theatre operations.
  • Intelligence Expansion - Focusing on the current GIS strategies and operational successes in preparation for the Olympic Games in London, London Transport GIS, anti-terrorism work around the major worldwide cities, use of imagery and data in border control and crime prevention and many others.
