  • Over Half of Attendees Admit to a False Sense of Security
  • Also Fear Cyberattack is Imminent
  • And Misjudge Greatest Cyber Threat

New York, May 24, 2012 – International law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP announced today that the Firm hosted a compelling lunch seminar titled “Issues in Cybersecurity” in which six Weil partners, alongside Weil’s Chief Information Officer, discussed various topics on cybersecurity including: 1) what are the risks and where are they coming from, 2) issues raised in corporate transactions, 3) litigation risks caused by cybercrime, 4) privacy and data protection risks, 5) SEC disclosure requirements regarding cybersecurity, and 6) a perspective from the CTO and answers to the question ‘What Should Management be Asking?’ Weil partner and chair of the Firm’s Technology and IP Transactions practice, Michael A. Epstein, served as moderator for the event.

The seminar was attended by over 100 managing directors, vice presidents, general counsel and IT professionals and kicked off with a survey of five questions which produced some surprising results. Almost 54% of the audience voted that they fear organizations are leaving themselves vulnerable to cybercrime based on a false sense of security. Additionally, almost 50% of the audience voted that the biggest cybersecurity threat at the moment is a virus or illegal acquisition of personal information acquired by spamming or phishing, when, in reality, targeted attacks from experienced cyberthieves have proved to be the biggest cybersecurity threat, at present.

Speakers at the event included Michael A. Epstein, Barry Fishley, Christopher L. Garcia, Ian M. Miller, Ellen J. Odoner, Jeffrey D. Osterman and Randi W. Singer. For more information or a copy of the slides from the presentation, please contact Weil’s Public Relations Department.
