Partnership with academia powers innovation at Wellspect HealthCare

Cross-sectoral partnerships are growing increasingly common in today’s business landscape as businesses seek to complement their own capabilities with the technologies and know-hows of different industries.

In the life science industry, partnerships with academia are on the rise as a mean to push boundaries and accelerate innovation. Martin Lovmar (04th from the left on above photo), Principal R&D Scientist at Wellspect HealthCare and Adjunct Professor at Chalmers department of life science highlights that partnerships across industries serve different purposes. “In the quest to cut down on the environmental footprint of our products and packaging, we have ongoing partnerships with different research consortiums. Over the years, we've also had many fruitful collaborations with Chalmers University of Technology. We have joined forces on various projects, often pushing for solutions to various healthcare related challenges, including infections relating to the use of urinary catheters”, explains Martin.

Ongoing project with Chalmers University of Technology

Highlighting one of the more recent projects, Martin explains that Wellspect has placed equipment at Chalmers’ Department of Industrial and Material Science. The equipment supports ongoing research at Chalmers while also allowing Wellspect to test different types of plastic catheter tubes with the support of highly skilled and specialized research staff. “This cooperation specifically, enables us to explore new material compositions that can enhance the clinical reliability of our products as well as their sustainability. Who knows, along the way, we may find materials with better properties that end up being widely used in the medical device industry”, says Martin.

Besides serving the needs of Wellspect’s R&D, placing the equipment at Chalmers allows young talents and researchers to access modern equipment. It also allows researchers at Chalmers to use the equipment for various research projects.

A win-win for everyone

By cooperating with academia, we can widen the reach and scope of various research projects to the benefit of our wider society. We can also contribute to a more innovative and modern academic environment for the education of tomorrow’s engineers and scientists.

“We all prosper from coming together and joining forces. The best innovations are often born when you bring together people of diverse skills and backgrounds”, concludes Martin.
