Charlotte, N.C., April 23, 2024. Dentsply Sirona, the world’s largest manufacturer of professional dental products and technologies and provider of continence care solutions, has announced that its Wellspect HealthCare business has received validation of its emission reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The validation confirms that the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets submitted by Wellspect HealthCare comply with the SBTi criteria and align with the 1.5°C trajectory.

The SBTi has commended Wellspect for its ambitious net-zero target, currently the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process. To date, around 8,000 companies worldwide have set science based-targets, although less than half have net-zero targets in place.

“I am incredibly proud of our Wellspect HealthCare team and the impressive strides they have made to further sustainability. The entire Dentsply Sirona organization is committed to continuing to drive toward our broad ESG goals. By defining ambitious goals, we set the course towards real change and creating a measurable positive impact for our employees, customers, communities, our industry and the planet,” said Tony Johnson, SVP, Chief Supply Chain Officer and Head of Sustainability at Dentsply Sirona.

Dedication to sustainability across the company validated by results

Since formalizing its “BEYOND. Taking action for a brighter world” strategy in 2021,Dentsply Sirona has demonstrated its dedication to sustainability by making solid progress against its goals. In fact, with a view to Scope 1 and 2 GHG emission intensity and water withdrawal intensity, the company achieved its reduction goals ahead of the original 2025 timeframe and is in the process of setting new near-term goals for 2030, in support of the company’s 2050 net-zero goal. In recognition of Dentsply Sirona’s progress and based on GIST impact data, the company was recently named one of “America’s top 300 Greenest Companies in 2024” by Newsweek magazine.

“We aspire to be a force of positive change and are well positioned to become sustainability leaders in our industry. By leveraging today’s technologies and industry know-how, we can produce a new generation of medical devices that provide more sustainable options for health care professionals and for end-product users. It is a win-win for everyone”, says Chris Schlenk, Group Vice President at Wellspect HealthCare.

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.
