A cracking pool made perfect with Kryton
A luxury property development in Cheshire now boasts a swimming pool to match, thanks to repairs carried out using Kryton concrete waterproofing products.
Residents of the opulent new mansion house were disappointed to find small cracks appearing in one corner of their state of the art swimming pool just a few months after moving in. They immediately contacted the developer to rectify the problem, who turned to Kryton distributor Source One Environmental for advice.
“I’d previously worked with the developer on a different issue at another development. That job related to water leaking into a basement, but it offered an opportunity to demonstrate the quality of repair that is achievable using Kryton’s technology,” stated Source One Environmental’s concrete technologist Jon Sweeney. “Projects can be quite unique, but we always examine the issue thoroughly and recommend the most suitable method of tackling it.
“The cracking indicated that there was a problem with the concrete behind the tiles and we advised the developer and his team to strip the tiles right back, both at the problem area and at the opposite corner, so we could understand the exact nature and scale of the problem. We were then able to propose a course of works so we could be totally confident that the problem wouldn’t recur.”
The large pool structure had been cast in sections, rather than in a single piece, which left weaker points for corrosion at the corner joints. To exacerbate this issue, the pool construction sub-contractor had not built the pool exactly to the architect’s specifications and the original added waterproofing had clearly failed.
“We found a void behind the tiles at one corner, which had caused the hairline crack to appear in the grouting,” explained Jon. “We agreed that the opposite corner should also be treated as it would be susceptible to the same issue. That way, we could be sure that we’d tackled 100% of the problem and reinstated the pool to an exemplary standard.”
All Kryton concrete waterproofing products contain a unique crystalline technology. Whenever moisture is present, microscopic crystals are formed, using up the moisture itself, as well as filling voids or cracks within the concrete. The crystalline technology is ever present within the concrete once it has been treated with the products, so the concrete structure is permanently protected by that treatment.
The procedure followed to make the repair on this occasion contained a number of key steps:
- The affected areas were cleaned of grout and chiselled to a depth of 2 inches, providing a good key for the Kryton products and opening the capillaries on the surface of the concrete.
- Kryton’s Krystol T1 was very tightly packed into the void as a dry pack to a depth of one inch. This product contains a very high concentration of the crystalline formula so the crystals would grow all around the repair. Krystol T1 is a versatile product for repair and refurbishment that can be applied as a slurry, spray or dry pack as required.
- Following this, Krystol Bari-cote, a product especially designed for the repair of cracks, holes and joints and which is supplied in powder form, was mixed with water to form a grout and added to the void to bring it back level with the rest of the concrete.
- The repair was then finished with a slurry coating of Krystol T1, painted onto the repaired area to a thickness of 0.6-1mm. The treated area was left to cure completely before the tiles were replaced.
“Once repaired, it was impossible to tell that there had ever been an issue,” commented Jon. “There is such a range of Kryton products that there is always a suitable method of repair, regardless of the application, or, as in this case, they can be used in combination for a permanent solution with a flawless finish.”
Krystol T1 and Krystol Bari-Cote, together with the Krystol Plug product that immediately stops water flow, form the Krystol Crack Repair System. The Kryton concrete waterproofing range also includes the Krystol Internal Membrane admixture for new builds.
