CONTRACTOR INSTALLS LARGEST PIPE DOCTOR PATCHES
Caerphilly-based Atec Drainage has successfully installed three Pipe Doctor patch repairs into 900mm diameter pipes - the largest patch repairs they’ve ever made.
Managing Director Mark Howell was on site supervising the work and explained: “We carry out the whole range of drainage services, for many industrial clients as well as commercial and domestic ones. In this instance, we were conducting ongoing maintenance at a large chemical refinery in South Wales when we discovered severe infiltration into some of their large bore storm drains. The pipes were subject to tidal influence, increasing the level of water pressure at every high tide.
“We initially discussed using an injection resin or an internal seal instead, but we felt a patch would be most effective, particularly given the high water pressure experienced. We regularly use the Pipe Doctor patch repair as it’s so cost-effective, but had never used this method on such large pipes before. This job also gave us the opportunity to try it.”
Source One Environmental, manufacturers of the Pipe Doctor system, gave on-site support to Atec during the repair. “Atec Drainage are very experienced with patch repair and the Pipe Doctor product, but it’s still unusual to install the product at such a large diameter,” commented Tony Hickman, Technical Sales Manager, who was on site on behalf of Source One Environmental. “We wanted to be there in case Atec came across any issues that they hadn’t experienced previously.”
Each fibre glass mat used was 3m x 1250mm in size, folded down and then wrapped around a 2m long packer. The total weight of the packer, once wrapped with the resin-impregnated patch, was in excess of 85kgs.
Mark described the installation as initially difficult: “The first repair proved quite tricky as there was very little room for manoeuvre when we lowered the packer into the manhole. We also had to wait for low tide each time. However, once we’d had experience of the first repair, it became much easier and the second repair was completed in next to no time.”
The Pipe Doctor system achieves permanent and watertight repairs, leaving the pipe strengthened at the patch location. Also available in the Pipe Doctor range are Pipe Doctor Radius for the repair of defects on bends and Pipe Doctor Lateral for branch connections.
“I’m confident that the patch repairs will work excellently. We always use Pipe Doctor products for patch repair as we’ve found that they have the highest quality and we’ve never had an issue. We’d now be confident in using patch repair at larger diameters in the future,” concluded Mark.
