Innovative lateral repair presented at WRc
The Pipe Doctor No-Dig Lateral Repair System (a form of top-hat repair) was one of seven recently-launched products presented during an Innovation Forum hosted by WRc (Water Research Centre). The Forum formed part of the WRc’s 3rdAnnual Innovation Day held at the end of April 2014.
This year, the day carried the theme ‘Delivering Value to Customers through Innovation’ and focussed on developments powering the industry into the future. The day was attended by over 300 delegates from the utilities management and environmental sectors, who enjoyed a varied programme of presentations, workshops and exhibitions.
Source One Environmental, the manufacturers of the Pipe Doctor Lateral Repair System, was invited to participate in the Innovation Forum following success at the SBWWI Water Dragons event in December last year. During that event, the company’s entry gained a Highly Commended second place position, having demonstrated that the product’s unique properties were a result of a determined inventive approach to a significant industry problem.
Jon Crean, Source One Environmental Managing Director, commented, “It was a privilege to present our product amongst a number of other ingenious new industry ideas. Together, we can keep moving the water management sector forward to meet the challenges of today and the future.”
The product is used for the rehabilitation of defective lateral junctions and was designed to provide a more robust, but lower cost, repair than current market solutions. The unique properties offered in the Pipe Doctor Lateral System include:
- Designed for manual, rather than robotic installation, significantly reducing upfront investment cost in the system by contractors.
- A ‘non-inversion’ technique, less complex than current inversion techniques, resulting in improved bond of repair patch to substrate.
- Combination of absorbent felt strips, wire ties and retaining bands, which embed within the structural repair, leaving nothing on which debris can snag during service.
- Suitable for use on relined pipes, offering a structural repair and mechanical bond to a broad range of known pipe lining materials
- A bespoke air control unit capable of monitoring and maintaining a constant air supply ensuring a right first time solution. Unit also incorporates vacuum circuits, capable of working independently of one another, to assist in the successful removal of equipment after repair has cured.
The Pipe Doctor Lateral System is only available to contractors who have attended the company’s two-day practical course in its installation. Source One Environmental is currently seeking partnerships with contractors who are looking to offer a quality lateral repair service to their customers.
For additional assurance in the product, the company is undergoing the approvals process with both WRc and Exova and is working with a number of Water Companies to gain their approval.
