LATERAL THINKING FOR LANES GROUP AS ENGINEERS GET TOP HAT TRAINING

Two more Lanes Group operatives have recently completed the Pipe Doctor Lateral training course, demonstrating the company’s commitment to training and innovative technology.

The course covers installation of the Pipe Doctor Lateral product, commonly known as a ‘top hat’, which was designed for the repair of defective lateral connections and was launched in January 2014. The course is offered by Source One Environmental, the manufacturers of the product, at their own Skills Centre in Yorkshire.

“The course takes a hands-on approach, ideal for the guys who work out in the field,” explained Tony Hickman, who delivers the course for Source One Environmental. “I explain the whole process of repairing a lateral connection to the trainees and they then get to install several ‘top hats’ for themselves, in our purpose-built drainage layout.”

Nico Girasoli and Adam Young, drainage engineers at Lanes Group, the largest independent supplier of specialist underground pipeline and utility services in the UK, attended the two-day training course during February and were ready to put their new skill to the test immediately.

“We had lateral repair work lined up for a high profile client in the Edinburgh area for just two days after we completed the course. The course fully prepared us to perform the repairs properly,” commented Nico.

It is estimated that there are more than 15 million lateral connections in need of repair in the UK. This winter’s extreme rainfall has raised groundwater levels significantly, which puts increased pressure on lateral joints in the drainage network and could lead to further damage.

The Pipe Doctor Lateral system offers a cost-efficient no-dig repair solution for these connections, without any requirement for expensive robotic equipment. The repair achieved is water and airtight and is 100% resistant to root ingress. The Pipe Doctor Lateral system uses the same proven resin used in other products in the market-leading Pipe Doctor range, to which it is an addition.

Source One Environmental also offers a one-day Energy & Utility Skills accredited training course in no-dig pipe repair using the WRc approved Pipe Doctor product. Nico and Adam attended this course last summer.

“Both courses are extremely clear and easy to follow,” explained Nico. “The training has made sure that we could make best use of the systems straight away. The patch repairs we’ve carried out have worked really well and our customers have been pleased with the results.”
