The Roofing Racers team taking part in last year’s Virgin Active London Triathlon, well and truly smashed its £50k target by raising an incredible £62k for Macmillan Cancer Support and Great Ormond Street Hospital charities.

Thanks to a record number of competitors – 139 in total, comprising of 49 individuals 90 others in teams - from across the roofing, roofline and window industries, this latest charity donation is set to make a difference to many peoples’ lives.

Philip Johns from Roofing Racers - organisers behind the event - hailed the total as “amazing” and he expressed his heartfelt thanks to all who took part and supported last year’s effort.

Philip added: “I never thought we would get to where we are from such a small idea. Roofing Racers has just completed its eighth consecutive year and, thanks to everyone involved, we have raised in excess of £360,000 to date for these two worthwhile causes that rely heavily on donations and financial support to continue their great work.

“As well as the record total, we can once again take pride from seeing participants from various industries all come together as one team at this iconic event,” he adds.

Commenting on this latest donation from Roofing Racers, Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Over the years that Roofing Racers has been supporting Macmillan, it has donated £150,000 which is a fantastic achievement. This kind of amount could fund 5,555 nursing hours, which has made a huge difference.”

Macmillan Cancer Support went on to thank Roofing Racers for its continued support and said: “It was really fantastic to see firsthand the commitment, passion and determination on the day of the triathlon and how everyone was united and focused on enjoying the day, challenging themselves and showing their support. This is also evident in the donations that have been received to date.”

A Spokesperson from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) commented on the “huge difference” that Roofing Racers have made to their charity, continuing: “With the total of £150,000 contributed so far towards Koala Ward over the past four years, these donations have been used to fund a number of different areas throughout the Ward, including bedroom facilities - such as fold-out beds for parents to stay with their children - play areas and play specialists to help the children have fun, recover and help them to understand their illness and essential state-of-the-art equipment that falls outside of what the NHS can provide.”

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) said: “We would like to thank Roofing Racers on behalf of the children, parents and staff for everything they have done to raise such an amazing amount and we look forward to working with Roofing Racers for many years so the hospital can continue to offer the best care possible to the patients in Koala Ward.”

Never one to rest on its laurels and with the bar raised high for 2015 with a target of 70k to be reached, Roofing Racers is now calling on everyone in the roofing, roofline and window industries to join in this year’s London Triathlon, due to be held on Saturday 8th August 2015.
