Warriors show no mercy in showdown with Southwold
Match Report: Eastern Counties 1 league match, Saturday 8 December 2012
Woodbridge Warriors 35 v Southwold 10
Woodbridge started fired up after their recent victory against Newmarket and appeared hungry for the win as Josh Kimber exploited an early penalty to put them three points up. Dan Bond took the restart catch cleanly to set Errol Jones off as the visitors struggled to settle in defence before they overturned a Woodbridge penalty line-out to launch scrum half Chippy Middleditch on a diagonal run with no 5, Ball, taking the fight back to the Warriors. Stewart Digweed stole the ball however and the Woodbridge backs were queuing up to run it back, Lance Barton first kicking too far for John Biu to score before they reset to see Josh Kimber pass back to John Biu who scored.
Southwold continued to hold the edge in the line-out but not in the scrum. This meant that possession was fairly even but Woodbridge seemed to be the more creative with ball in hand and more consistent with the boot, Josh Kimber kicking two more penalties whereas Southwold’s Kicker, Elliot McDaniel, was having an off day. The visitors did put in some sustained attacking pressure towards the end of the first half but failed to take points, passing forward in the three-quarters and coming upon some solid stops from a rough and ready defence.
The second half continued with the Warriors clearly relishing the opportunities to run at their opposition and seeking the bonus point. Despite some crafty work on the left wing by Piers Currie on the blind side after a strong maul where Chippy Middleditch had another great run Woodbridge’s Ben Cope drove well and a chip over allowed Neil Scopes to snaffle and score on 5 minutes. Pressing hard Josh Kimber missed a penalty but Ben Cope, great in the loose, got the ball through the backs where John Biu offloaded to Jono Cooke who scored wide. Southwold switched the kick off side but John Biu stole the ball under pressure, passed to Taff Lloyd who ran from his own 10m line to score minutes later.
Undeterred by this onslaught Southwold rallied and worked their way back up field for Darren Fisher to blast a way through and take back 5 points. Clearly motivated the visitors resisted an attack on their 5m line to get back into the Warriors half where Ben Balls repeated the previous tactic from a lineout in the Warriors 22 to score by the left flag.
The resurgence continued putting the hosts under pressure but the clock was against Southwold who had left it too late to threaten.
