Captain Slow smoked… bring on The Stig
World Rallycross Champion Petter Solberg has laid down a challenge to The Stig after humbling the white-suited one’s Top Gear colleague James May – Captain Slow – in a specially staged World RX round at Lydden Hill.
May raced against Solberg and other World RX regulars – including Top Gear USA presenter and regular racer Tanner Foust – at the British circuit last December. The show was aired for the first time in Britain tonight.
Despite his Captain Slow tag, few in the world have driven faster than May. He once wheeled a Bugatti Veyron at 417kph (259mph). But he couldn’t keep up with Petter. In fact, he didn’t see the two-time world champion for dust.
Soon after chalking up a sixth win and 10th2014 podium at the wheel of his PSRX Supercar, Petter said: “I have struggled at Lydden Hill for the last couple of races there, so I was really pleased with the speed we showed. We found the right set-up with the car and that gave me more confidence for the next World RX round there.”
Asked what he thought of May’s performance, Petter’s reply was telling.
“Did he turn up?”
May’s moves were charted by the world’s most-watched factual television programme with insightful and informed commentary coming from fellow driving Gods Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond – who surveyed his efforts from the safety of the spotters’ tower.
“I have to be honest,” said Solberg, “it’s not easy to get into one of these cars and drive it with 600bhp. I didn’t see much of James on the track, but you have to give him credit for coming and having a go.
“Maybe he should come and have a go at the first round of the 2015 series in Portugal. Or if he can’t make it, why not send the man without any sponsors? You know, the man in the white suit...”
In just over one month Solberg will start the defence of his world title in Montalegre, Portugal (April 25/26).
One thing we liked about Top Gear:
Showing them how to drive.
One thing we didn’t like about Top Gear:
Not seeing much of that May chap.
If you want to know more about Top Gear-slayer Solberg…
