Saintly Solberg victorious on Valentine’s Day
Mr and Mrs Solberg celebrated Valentine’s Day in the perfect way – with a third successive victory on Rally Sweden Historic, which finished in Hagfors this afternoon (Saturday February 14). Petter’s latest rally success comes 10 years after his dominant win with the Subaru World Rally Team on the same roads.
Petter and Pernilla were the class of a quality field of historic motors in their Ford Escort Mk II – powering to a three-minute win after just 128 kilometres of competition. Fastest on every stage in the Historic event, had Petter entered the Escort in the WRC qualifier running ahead, he would have beaten R5 machinery on most. Not for the first time – and quite appropriately today – Petter wasted no time in sweeping Pernilla off her feet as they celebrated.
Petter said: “This has been fantastic. I did this event for the first time in 2013 and really enjoyed it, but it’s just got better and better every time. This year we had done some more work on the car and it was just amazing. I’m a rally driver again and it was fantastic. I loved it.
“Driving at home in Norway, in front of the big crowds was unbelievable for me yesterday and then it was the same for Pernilla when we were competing here in Sweden today. What a great event and, not a bad result either, eh…”
Pernilla added: “Petter did a very good job for the last two days. He drove really well and I think we definitely entertained some of the fans. For sure, we entertained them in Vargasen, when we came over Colin’s Crest. I could feel in the car that we weren’t lifting off – we flew so far! I’m sure we could hear the cheering inside the car!”
One thing we liked about Sweden:
That’ll be the hat-trick – and Petter’s fourth Swedish win (including the WRC qualifier he dominated in 2005).
One thing we didn’t like about Sweden:
Our Ford Escort is lovely and sounds beautiful, but it would been nice to be winning in a World Rally Car again!
