Solberg’s back on track (and the podium) in France

Petter Solberg’s summer of discontent is done. He’s back in business and back on the podium. The reigning FIA World Rallycross Champion finished second in the final of today’s World RX of France.

Solberg’s lead at the top of the table might have shrunk slightly, but Petter doesn’t mind. The PSRX superstar took a strategic approach to this weekend’s Lohéac action and it worked.

Solberg said: “The statistics from the last three races haven’t been so good. We had a strategy for this race to get most possible points in a clever way. And that’s what we did.

“I have to think about the championship now and that means I’m not able to take risks to win all of the races. We put a lot of effort into the intermediate result and used most of our tyres there. Some gearbox problems on the first day meant we struggled a little bit, bit still we managed to be second at the end of the day.

“I knew before the start of the final it would be difficult to win the race. Our tyres were pretty well worn out.

“I’m looking forward to the next race. Most important now is that we are back on the podium with still a good margin of world championship points.”

Next time out World RX of Barcelona September 19/20

The FIA World Rallycross Championship arrives in Catalunya for the first time, where Petter and the PSRX team will look to light up one of the world’s finest racetracks. The Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona has played host to some of the most entertaining races in all forms of motorsport, but nothing will compare to World RX in a fortnight’s time.

Almost finally, an answer:

Petter won the 2003 Tour de Corse, four days after wrapping it around a telegraph pole in shakedown.

Finally, a question:

Freddie Mercury and opera singer Montsererrat Caballe joined forces to reach number two in the UK singles chart in 1992 (the song was first released in 1987, before Mercury’s death), name the track.
