WPD develops large offshore wind park in Northern Finland

WPD Finland Oy, a recently established company belonging to WPD group, is
developing a large offshore wind park at Suurhiekka shoal in Oulu region, 20 to
25 km east of Haukiputaa and Ii and some 20 km north of Hailuoto. WPD estimates
that the site has space for about 80 wind turbines with the total nominal capacity
of 400 MW. The estimated production is about 1.5 TWh / year, which corresponds
to almost 2% of Finland’s total electricity demand.

In the Regional Plan for Oulu Region ratified by Ministry of Environment, suitable areas were
reserved for wind parks. The Suurhiekka shoal is one of these areas. In the regional wind power
site survey conducted by Ministry of Environment and Council of Oulu Region, the Suurhiekka
area was considered one of the best wind park areas in whole Finland.

WPD has summoned up an expert group to support the project development. The environmental
impact assessment which is required for the projects in this scale has already been started. Due
to the large scale of the project, the engineering, environmental studies, and permit procedure will
take several years. According to WPD, the construction could start earliest 2012.

WPD has extensive experience in wind power both onshore and offshore. The group is
developing a portfolio of offshore wind projects totalling 5000 MW and is thus one of the leading
companies in the line of business. WPD is developing e.g. three offshore projects on the Swedish
side of Gulf of Bothnia.
