Liverpool Waters goes to committee with a recommendation for approval

Liverpool Waters, a project to regenerate 60 hectares of historic dockland in North Liverpool into a world class high quality mixed-use waterfront quarter, is going to committee [6 March 2011] with a recommendation for approval.

Submitted to Liverpool City Council, by global multi-disciplinary consultant WYG, the planning application boasts an investment of approximately £5.5 billion, and will deliver 1,69,000 square meters (18.2 million square feet) of new buildings and lead to the creation of more than 15,000 new jobs with over 200 constructions jobs every year for over 30 years.

Led by Peel Holdings Ltd, the scheme is the most ambitious regeneration project of its kind in the UK which will also include 9,000 new homes, a cultural building, a new cruise liner terminal and the proposed Shanghai Tower which will be the tallest UK building outside of London.

Paul Grover, Regional Director, WYG said: “This is a significant milestone on the Liverpool Waters project since its conception in 2007 and if given planning approval will symbolise the re-birth of Liverpool as a truly global city.

“With a project of this scale, to be delivered over 30 years, we have had to ensure there is an appropriate balance between the required assessments and appraisals to be carried out to give adequate planning certainty, whilst ensuring that sufficient flexibility is maintained to enable the development to respond effectively to an evolving planning policy context and the development market over the lifetime of the planning permission.

“Whilst all matters are to be reserved for subsequent approval, planning conditions and planning obligations have been drafted to ensure that the project will deliver high quality design.”

WYG has worked on behalf of Peel on this project since 2007 providing a range of services including project management, town planning, stakeholder consultation and a full range of environmental disciplines.

Ian Pollitt, Development Investment Surveyor, Peel Holdings said: “The Liverpool Waters proposals are unique and have the potential to change the future of the city. The development proposed is on an unprecedented scale almost beyond living experience which if delivered would transform the city’s waterfront, creating a new international business destination, expand the city’s economy and regenerate north Liverpool.

“WYG has been able to provide us with a truly multi-disciplinary service to take forward what is currently the largest planning application in the UK.”

It is expected that the Council’s decision will be announced on 6 March 2012.
