Wedding guests donate £2,000 to charity

Local newly weds who requested their guests donate to four charities instead of sending wedding gifts have raised £2,000 and counting.

Simon Eden, a senior hydrologist at Leeds-headquartered WYG and wife Jenny, an equine veterinary surgeon, didn’t want gifts from their 126 guests to celebrate their marriage, but instead asked that donations be made to the charities: Compassion, Tearfund, ACE and SPANA.

Married at the St Alkelda church near Settle the Leeds couple, who have just returned from their honeymoon, will be splitting the money raised equally between the four charities which will help provide basics like water, education and medical and veterinary care in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Simon Eden, Senior Hydrogeologist, WYG said: “Jenny and I have all that we need and didn’t want our friends, family and colleagues wasting money on gifts when it could be better spent elsewhere.

“We have worked with these charities over the years taking our skills and using them in developing countries to benefit others. We couldn’t think of a better way to continue our help then by inviting our guests to donate money to these worthy causes, helping to make the difference between life and death for people and animals.

“Not only have my family and friends been enormously generous, I have also had support from my colleagues at work, and my employer WYG, who has agreed to match the contributions up to a £1,000.  This brings the total raised so far to more than £3,000.”

Supporting the charities over the years, the couple each sponsor a child through Compassion, Simon has volunteered with Tearfund in Africa on water engineering projects and Jenny has volunteered with ACE and SPANA in north Africa, helping working horses, donkeys and mules and the people relying on them.

Ben Whitworth, Company Secretary, WYG said: “We are full of admiration for Simon’s and Jenny’s commitment and generosity to their chosen charities and delighted to be able to support them in this unusual way.  We wish them both all the best for the future.”
