WYG B&I wins prestigious Concrete Society Sustainability Award

International multi-disciplinary consultancy WYG’s Buildings & Infrastructure team recently won the Concrete Society Sustainability Award for its involvement in the new £67 million Business School and Student Hub at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

Described by the judges as “… a very impressive high-quality prestigious building”, the multi-function faculty and cross-university facilities include student and academic services, catering and informal learning areas in addition to lecture theatres, seminar rooms, offices and specialist post-graduate facilities.

The modern building with two glazed atria features large areas of high quality concrete. The construction comprised a concrete frame with cores providing stability, and precast was used extensively to assist in the programme of the works.  With exposed concrete soffits and cooling pipes integrated within the structure, in addition to the use of ground source heat pumps, photo-voltaics and grey water, the building is highly sustainable.

According to the judges: “The use and quality of the concrete in this building is exceptional and may be used as a benchmark for what can be achieved.”

Based on a congested site located close to the Mancunian Way and the live campus, a diversion of a major trunk sewer into Manchester City Centre was required.

Collecting the award on 1 November, Anthony Fuller, Director (pictured left) and Simon Smith, Associate Director (pictured right) of the B&I team said: “The award is a great tribute to the expertise and commitment of WYG’s Civil & Structural and Environmental disciplines who worked closely with external partners on this project.”
