WYG celebrates multiple awards

International multi-disciplinary consultancy, WYG, is currently celebrating winning a number of major awards for projects at the University of Liverpool and Manchester Metropolitan University.
The University of Liverpool Vine Court residences is a 712 bedroom new build for student use in term time and as a conference facility during the summer. The £35m “design & build” contract involved WYG carrying out multi-disciplinary detailed design services on this BREEAM “excellent” rated, low environmental impact building. Working to an extremely tight construction programme to meet the start of the new academic year in 2012, WYG used fast construction techniques including en suite accommodation pods and pre-fabricated services incorporated within the risers. The building won the “Best Student Accommodation” category in the Your Move property awards 2012.
On the same site, WYG provided civil and structural engineering consultancy services to win the 2012 S-Lab award in the “New Laboratory Building” category for the University of Liverpool Central Teaching Laboratories. The building presented a number of challenges including craning 14.4 long 450mm deep precast units on a cramped site, and complex service integration associated with laboratory construction.
In a further “double whammy” the £55m Manchester Metropolitan University Business School and Student Hub brought in two prestigious awards for “sustainability” and best “large project in the North West” in the 2012 Concrete Society and the Lancashire & Cheshire Branch of the Institution of Structural Engineers awards respectively.
The Business school is a visually striking and highly innovative building, and is classed as an exemplar project for other universities looking to include hubs on their sites. The construction has created a cathedral-like quality and demonstrates that exposed, untreated concrete can be used to great effect in public buildings.
All the buildings have achieved a BREEAM “excellent” rating through incorporation of a number of sustainable features including the use of exposed structure to provide thermal mass, air source heat/cooling, photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, and grey water harvesting.
