WYG prepares mobilisation on €25m integrated waste management project in Romania
WYG will be supervising a €25m project to modernise the solid waste management infrastructure in Covasna County, Romania, bringing improved waste collection and treatment services to the county’s more than 200,000 residents.
Appointed by Covasna County Council, and due to start work on August 1, the global multi-disciplinary consultancy will be helping to improve the waste management systems in Covasna while bringing them in line with EU environmental standards.
WYG will supervise works in four towns: Sfantu Gheorghe, Targu Secuiesc, Covasna and Intorsura Buzaului. The work involves construction of an environmentally compliant landfill facility, the building of a waste transfer station and the closing of four non-compliant landfills.
Valentin Micu, project director, WYG said: “This project is a significant win for us showing how WYG is diversifying and internationalising its expertise and offering. We have a strong presence in Romania’s policy advice sector providing socio-economic work and this project is, we hope, the first of many to provide our technical services in the waste management and environment infrastructure sectors.
“Co-funded by the EU and the Romanian Government, the project will enable significant improvements in the county’s infrastructure for waste collection and treatment bringing a considerable reduction in pollution and contamination factors. Additionally, the project is expected to benefit the local economy by creating over 100 jobs during the implementation phase.”
Baki Janos, head of the project implementation unit, Covasna County Council said: “We are looking forward to working with WYG on such a significant project which will improve the quality of life for those living in the County.
