WYG secures harbour infrastructure contract in northern Poland

International multidisciplinary consultant WYG has been appointed to help aid the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority on one of the largest port complexes in the Baltic Sea.

The award-winning consultant will be preparing all the documents necessary to enable the Authority to start construction on a €13M project to modernise port infrastructure and build new terminals and buffer car parks at two northern Poland ports, one in Szczecin and the other in Świnoujście.  WYG will also be helping to prepare all the documents necessary to gain co-financing from the European Union.

The project forms part of the ‘Multiple-year Investment Programme’ planned to run until 2015, which includes building new quays and modernising port infrastructure, as well as improving roads and rebuilding rail infrastructure. The programme aims to meet growing demand and improve and expand services provided in the two ports.

Tomasz Gierwatowski, Managing Director, WYG said: “We are delighted to be working on such an important project for the Polish maritime economy. The feasibility study will demonstrate the need for improvements in terms of port infrastructure.  We will use our extensive experience in securing financing for a number of significant projects in order to help the Szczecin and Świnoujście Authority to gain funds for the large investment to begin.

“Situated on the shortest route linking Scandinavia with Central and Southern Europe, and on the Baltic maritime route linking Russia and Finland with Western Europe, both ports form a rapidly developing complex, with annual handling volumes reaching 20 million tons.

“So that the ports are prepared for the expected intensive increase in cargo handling in the Baltic Sea region and the shifting of cargo from roads to sea it is imperative that the infrastructure modernisation and port extensions take place.”

Due to an increase in the number of heavy goods vehicles in the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście and in the harbour terminal in Świnoujście part of the project will include modernisation and extension of parking space.

The ‘Multiple-year Investment Programme’ includes:
• Construction of the LNG discharging port in the outer port of Świnoujście - 2010-2012
• Reconstruction of road and rail infrastructure in the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście - 2011-2014
• Extension of port infrastructure at the southern part of the Świnoujście port - 2012-2014
• Extension of port infrastructure at the Northern end of the Ewa Peninsula in the port of Szczecin - 2011-2014.

Szczecin and Świnoujście are universal seaports and offer bulk and general cargo handling as well as passenger transport.
