PRESS RELEASE
11 JANUARY 2013

WYG’s Ankara office has recently won a major two-year 1.95 million Euro contract with the Ministry of the European Union (EU) to deliver technical assistance for building EU affairs capacity in Turkey’s Governorates, in anticipation of the country’s accession to the European Union.

Before it can join the EU, Turkey must successfully complete negotiations with the European Commission on each of the 35 chapters of the ‘Acquis Communautaire’, the total body of EU law, following which EU member states must unanimously agree on whether to grant Turkey membership.

The objective of the contract won by WYG is to increase the volume of information on, and expertise in European Union issues, in addition to strengthening technical and administrative capacity within each of the 20 provinces involved, in order to support management of European Union funds and engagement in the accession process.

The project’s key components include training needs assessment and curriculum development covering EU policies and the accession process, and will also involve managing the provincial consultation and co-ordination committees involved in the various capacity-building activities and study visits to Brussels.

The announcement was closely followed by the award of a second European contract with the Ministry of EU Affairs to provide technical assistance in the promotion of civil society dialogue between the EU and Turkey (Phase III). The project will see WYG Turkey provide specialist support to launch, build awareness and promote a number of grant schemes, involving an expected 2,000 participants at information sessions to be held in ten provinces throughout the country. Having worked on an earlier phase of the project, WYG is highly qualified to implement this next phase within the tight timeframe that has been allowed.

These contracts are a valuable addition to WYG’s already significant portfolio of expertise in the EU arena. The global project management and technical consultancy group holds a market-leading position in the delivery of EuropeAid contracts having won several major framework contracts, both in Turkey and further afield, for projects ranging from cultural and regional development programmes to large-scale education and waste water treatment schemes.
