In Honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Leading Manufacturer of Xylitol Products Donates to America’s ToothFairy

(Orem, UT) February 6, 2012— Xlear®, Inc. (pronounced “clear,” www.xlear.com), recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of xylitol based products in the United States, recently made a generous donation of $100,000 to the National Children's Oral Health Foundation: America’s ToothFairy® (NCOHF) to both honor and coincide with the American Dental Association’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, held annually during the month of February. The month-long observance aims to raise children’s awareness through educational programs about the importance of oral health and effective preventative methods.

Formed in 2006, NCOHF is dedicated to eliminating pediatric oral disease and promoting overall health and well-being for millions of children from vulnerable populations. The organization has delivered nearly $10 million in direct funding as well as donated dental products and educational resources to a growing affiliate network reaching more than 600,000 children per year. This recent donation by Xlear®, Inc. has created a vital partnership, fostering an expansion of services to a larger number of children.

“With the ever-growing concern of children’s health in today’s society, more parents and kids alike should be aware of the ways they can prevent tooth decay and other related issues,” said Nate Jones, CEO of Xlear®, Inc. “America’s ToothFairy really has the ability to impact lives for the better and we are proud to provide any support we can.”

“We are honored that Xlear Inc. has joined America’s ToothFairy as a major underwriter to give our nation’s most vulnerable children the building blocks they need for happy, healthy futures,” stated Fern Ingber, MEd, NCOHF President and CEO. “Their generosity supports our mutual commitment to eliminate children’s suffering from preventable pediatric dental disease.”

Xlear®, Inc.’s interest in dental health sparks from its in-depth research and use of xylitol as a healthy sugar substitute. Xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but also promotes good dental hygiene. When exposed to as little as 15 grams of xylitol a day, the bacteria in the mouth lose their ability to stick to teeth and form plaque. Studies have proven that when combined with a regular dental hygiene routine, regular use of xylitol gums, mints and candy can reduce dental cavities by as much as 80%. This along with other preventative methods, including brushing and flossing regularly, provides children with ways to avoid dental restoration.

What is xylitol?

Pure xylitol is a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar. Xylitol is an all-natural sweetener derived from corn cobs, birch trees and other natural sources, and is similar to sugar in taste and texture, but with unique health benefits not found in other sweeteners. Xylitol contains 40 percent fewer calories than sugar, has a net carb level of only 0.4 per gram, and has minimal impact on blood-sugar levels, making it an appropriate sugar substitute for diabetics. Xylitol is absorbed slowly by the body, resulting in a low glycemic index of seven compared to sugars index of 83 (or higher).
