The glamorous superyacht industry is fast evolving in response to the global environmental call for decreasing pollution. From ergonomic design to renewable energy, industry experts are working hard to make these sustainable factors the industry standard. Pioneering the use of bespoke photovoltaic glass within the structure of superyachts is Barcelona-based Nautiglass S.L.

Nautiglass S.L. specialises in the manufacture and installation of photovoltaic glass, also known as PV glass, where solar cells are embedded between two glass panes to generate clean, renewable energy; reducing a yacht’s carbon footprint.

Pedro Maiquez Lopez, managing director of Nautiglass said, “Using photovoltaic glass within the superyacht structure helps to capture solar energy and releases a completely clean renewable energy. We have installed this glass on cruise ships and both new build and refitted superyachts - it all decreases the level of CO2 released into the environment.”

Unlike wind power, the solar cells generate power even when the yacht is stationary at anchor, recharging service batteries, which in turn powers basic auxiliary services such as refrigeration, water pumps and emergency lighting.

This energy-generating photovoltaic glass holds many benefits, without sacrificing crystal transparency. Evolving technology has assured that PV windows and panels are robust, safe and reliable for use in a wide range of climates, making it the perfect edition to any luxury yacht.

Nautiglass S.L is a leader in the manufacture of custom curved and flat glass and has worked with expert refit shipyard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB’92) on projects such as M/Y Talita G.

Nautiglass S.L. will be in attendance at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (9th to 14th September), Barcelona International Boat Show (24th to 28th September) and METS (18th to 20th November).
