The Naantali multi-fuel power plant was inaugurated today
YIT CORPORATION Press release, December 8, 2017, at 15:50 p.m.
The NA4 CHP power plant is Finland’s first industrial project in which an alliance model was used to carry out the engineering work.
During the engineering work related to the NA4 CHP plant, the alliance model proved its strength in schedule management, cost-efficiency and quality. The project was completed on schedule and within the planned budget. In addition, during the project the co-operation created by the alliance model resulted in innovations that enabled an end result better than planned. Furthermore, occupational safety in the project has been at a high level.
“The project has been successfully completed. In this project, good groundwork and planning provided a solid foundation. It was understood that an open and solution-oriented organisation is the core of project work,” says Tapani Bastman, CEO of Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto.
Vice President Anne Piiparinen from YIT agrees.
“When objectives are carefully planned together, and everyone is working towards common objectives, the work bears fruit. Large projects such as this require close co-operation. It was also great to see how a well-managed innovation system resulted in people displaying new types of competencies. When they were encouraged to come up with new ideas, they did exactly that. Actually, more than 100 small and big ideas presented during the project were implemented in the project.”
According to Bastman, the end result of the project, the new multi-fuel power plant, is an extremely important project for the region.
“A power plant that uses biofuel is very important to the Turku region. Instead of coal, a significant share of the power plant’s fuel is purchased from local suppliers,” says Bastman.
The project manager for the entire power plant project, Heikki Jaakkola from Fortum, is glad that the investment decision concerning the power plant was made in the past, and the project is now in its final stages. One can also be satisfied with the way objectives were met. He thinks that the alliance model used in the construction of the power plant was a positive influence that increased the co-operation in the project.
“Target-orientation and transparency are things that even more traditional construction projects would do well to adopt from this model,” says Jaakkola.
The new NA4 CHP multi-fuel power plant in Naantali will partly replace an old coal-fuelled power plant that has been in operation for approximately 50 years. The new power plant will produce both electricity and heat. The main objective of the power plant is to increase the use of renewable energy. The objective is that the share of biofuel will be 60%, which will be reached with the new transport system in 2019.
The multi-fuel power plant’s fuel capacity will be approximately 430 MW. The produced heat will mainly be used for district heating in the Turku region. The alliance for the Naantali power plant has been made up of A-Insinöörit Suunnittelu Oy, Insinööritoimisto AX-LVI Oy, Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto and YIT Construction Ltd.
The construction of the power plant was started in April 2015, and it was completed on schedule in December 2017.
