YIT and The City of Tampere have signed a development phase contract for the renovation and expansion of the Tampere City Central Office Building. The project will be implemented as a cooperative project management contract. The client is the Tampereen virastotalo KKOy, owned by the City of Tampere and the building will be built for the use of the City of Tampere. After the development phase, the project aims to enter the implementation phase. The estimated total value of the construction project is approximately EUR 48 million, which may be revised as the development phase progresses. The contract for the development phase will be included in the order book for the last quarter of the year.

Construction will begin in spring 2023, and the contract is set to be completed in the summer of 2026. The contract size is altogether 18,200 gross square metres, of which the share of renovation is 13,300 gross square metres and the share of new construction is 4,900 gross square metres. The office building on the Puutarhakatu street side will be demolished, and a five-story annex will be built in its place. The south and north side of the old building will be renovated.

The Central Office Building is a historically significant building and a protected property in the local detailed plan. A council hall is also located in the office building. The building will be the office of approximately 900 workers in the future. The street level of the office building will be open and available for use by all city residents.

“It is great to get to work in cooperation with YIT in a collaborative project like this. The renovation and expansion of the Tampere Office Building is the largest project of Tampereen Tilapalvelut Oy, and we have accepted this challenge with great interest. However, the spaces will be built for their users and for city residents. We want to succeed at this objective as well as possible,” says the Project Engineer of Tampereen Tilapalvelut Petri Saarinen.

“YIT has the competence and experience to reach the objectives set for the project in the RTS Environmental Classification system, energy efficiency optimisation, carbon footprint configuration and alternative energy sources. Our objective is in cooperation with the customer to utilise renewable energy solutions, such as solar power and district cooling”, says Tom Ekman, YIT’s EVP of the Business Premises segment.

The building will be designed and constructed to be healthy and safe, and the systems and devices chosen for the building will be as energy efficient as possible. The spaces will be constructed to be multipurpose and convertible, so that they can be modified to suit the users’ needs in the future.
