YIT received a new large-scale project at Munich Airport, Germany

YIT Germany GmbH has received a large-scale contract worth over EUR 35 million for the satellite terminal at the Franz-Josef Strauss International Airport in Munich, which covers heating and cooling systems, sanitation and fire extinguishing technology, and electrical engineering. YIT’s individually developed construction process and implementation concept as well as relevant references played a key role in the contract decision.

YIT will be installing around 41,000 sprinkler heads, 250 kilometers of piping, 460 kilometers of electrical wiring, and more in the new 125,800 m² building. Based on the energy concept developed by engineering firm Hausladen, 20,000 m² of underfloor heating and 30,000 m² of chilled ceiling provided by YIT will ensure comfortable temperatures with low primary energy consumption. These components will be integrated for instance in the walking space inside the temperature-controlled facade and make a major contribution to implementing the sustainable, energy-optimized building concept. Compared to the existing Terminals 1 and 2 this will generate 40% lower relative CO2 emissions.

The satellite will be created through an expansion of Terminal 2 and the existing luggage sorting hall east of the terminal building. Provided by K+P Architekten, the design will integrate both the current traffic control tower and the luggage handling hall, which will continue operating throughout the entire construction period and by 2015 increase its overall capacity by 35%. With the 27 new aircraft parking spaces in close proximity to the building, the satellite terminal will be able to clear some 11 million passengers per year following the planned completion in 2015.

This contract represents the next chapter in the long-standing business relationship between Flughafengesellschaft München and YIT. During construction of Terminal 2 from 2000 to 2003, the company was responsible for installing a portion of the building technology.
