YIT to build the Melkinlaituri elementary school and daycare centre using a life cycle model in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki

YIT and the City of Helsinki have agreed on the construction of the Melkinlaituri elementary school and daycare centre using a life cycle model in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki. YIT is responsible for the project’s design, implementation and 20-year service period, which also encompasses responsibility for the properties’ optimal energy consumption. The building will be owned by the City of Helsinki. The total value of the contract for YIT is approximately EUR 44 million. The project will be recorded in the order backlog once the project's building permit has gained legal force.

The premises will be used by 550 primary and pre-school pupils and 250 children in daycare. Pedagogically diverse spaces support activities and create a good environment for learners to learn and grow. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2025, once the planning phase has been completed. The property is slated for completion in late spring 2027. The scope of the property is approximately 8,200 gross square metres.

The spaces intended for versatile use are designed to be adaptable and flexible in terms of size and spatial characteristics, so that they can be adjusted in line with changes in the pupils’ age structure and needs. Some of the shared spaces of the building will be available for reservation and use by residents and other operators in the evenings and at weekends outside the operating hours.

Steps will be taken to keep the carbon footprint of the building and construction site as low as possible throughout their life cycle. The goal is to achieve a material- and energy-efficient and emission-free construction site using renewable energy sources. Plans have also been made to utilise recycled hollow-core slabs. The goal is to gain a four-star rating for the project in the RTS classification. The property will be equipped with a solar power system that will cover at least 30% of the required electricity for the lighting and property.
