York Housing Association has started work on a housing project to bring one of Scarborough’s disused buildings back into use, working in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council.

Newburn House was formerly Scarborough Borough Council’s homeless hostel, but closed several years ago and has since stood empty.  The property will be transferred to York Housing Association, which will refurbish and develop the property to create six one-bedroom apartments for young people.  Tenants in the building will supported by local charity, The Cambridge Centre.

“Scarborough has a real need for high quality affordable housing, particularly for young people, and Newburn House is an ideal property to meet this need.  By bringing it back into use, it will not only improve the appearance of the building, but also provide young people with self-contained homes where they can receive appropriate on-site support to give them the best possible start in life,” comments chief executive of York Housing Association, Julia Histon.

Councillor Bill Chatt, Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, added, “We are very pleased to see York Housing Association commence the redevelopment of Newburn House. Not only will it provide much needed supported affordable housing in the town, but will also bring a long standing empty property back into use. This is a positive result all round and we look forward to the completion of the redevelopment.”

York Housing Association is providing the majority of the funding, supported by Scarborough Borough Council.  Newburn House joins 56 other properties in the borough that are owned or managed by YHA.  It is anticipated that first occupants will move into Newburn House in the New Year.
