CALLING ALL STAGE PERFORMERS IN YORK AND NORTH YORKSHIRE

Local performers are being invited to audition for the York Mystery Plays, when they return to York Minster in summer 2016 for only the second time in their history.

The team is kicking off the casting process with a series of briefing events throughout September where community performers can learn more about the production from the director and producer.

Leading roles being recruited for the performances, which will run over five weeks from 26 May to 30 June 2016, include Adam, Eve, Noah and Satan, as well as a range of supporting parts.

Nicola Corp, York Minster Mystery Plays producer, explained: “A talented community cast will be at the heart of our production, working with a professional lead actor over five weeks to perform the greatest story ever told in a spectacular setting.

“York has a wealth of talented community performers who we’re hoping to attract for the production, which promises to be a celebration of the city’s heritage and cultural identity -it’s most famous stories brought to life in its most iconic building.

The briefing events will give people the chance to learn more about the production, what we’re looking for and the time commitments involved, as well as ask myself and our director Phillip Breen questions. Those interested in being involved will be able to sign up on the spot for an audition later in the autumn.”

The events will take place at St William’s College, College Street, York YO1 7JF on the following dates:

  • Saturday 5 September 2015, 10.00am
  • Wednesday 9 September 2015, 6.30pm
  • Tuesday 22 September 2015, 6.30pm
  • Sunday 27 September 2015, 1.00pm

If you are interested in attending, please contact Production Assistant Laura Cookson by emailing laurac@yorkminster.org or calling 01904 557218 to confirm which meeting you would like to come to.

Later this autumn, the team will also be looking to recruit Mystery Makers - volunteers to help put the show together including prop makers, wardrobe assistants and backstage crew. The Box Office will open for ticket sales in January 2016.

The Mystery Plays were last performed at York Minster in 2000 and the 2016 production will be only the second time they have been hosted by the cathedral in their 700 year history.
