Local cupcakery puts a cherry on the top of al fresco catering in Dean's Park

A vintage caravan painted in candy pink has taken up residence in the grounds of York Minster’s Dean’s Park this week, as cupcakes make it to the top of the menu for summer visitors.

The traditional 1970s caravan – which has been nicknamed ‘Flo’ - has been creatively converted into a compact catering concession by the team behind the Crumbs Cupcakery in College Street, and will take up residence right through to November inside Dean’s Park, close to the West Door of York Minster.  Ice cream and cupcakes feature prominently on the menu, along with hot and cold drinks – ideal sustenance for those planning, or having just completed, a climb to the top of York Minster’s Central Tower.

In keeping with the caravan’s traditional British summertime theme, picnickers will not be restricted to enjoying their confections sitting on the grass, as a host of traditional deckchairs will also be available within the Park for customers of ‘Crumbs on the Road’.

“With the Minster itself packed with exciting displays, exhibitions and even its very own underground visitor attraction, Revealing York Minster, we simply do not have the room to offer catering within the cathedral walls, but we’re confident that our visitors will be happy to enjoy the superb cakes and treats available from the Crumbs team just outside the West Door,” comments events manager, Stephanie O’Gorman.  “Of course, with Dean’s Park also proving a popular venue for picnickers and those seeking some al fresco tranquillity during the main tourism season, they’ll also be able to pick up an ice-cream or delicious coffee, served with the Crumbs team’s impeccable service and friendly smile, whilst they are here.”

‘Flo’ is the brainchild of Crumbs Cupcakery owner, Danielle Goodhand, who will be baking the cupcakes fresh each day from their College Street premises.  The look of the caravan continues the vintage theme found in the main Cupcakery, and reflects the company’s ethos, based upon traditional British values.  All of the produce is home-baked using locally-sourced ingredients, from free-range eggs from a Driffield farm, to coffee by Taylors of Harrogate.

“Within the Cupcakery, we try and make everyone that walks through the door feel as if we are welcoming them to our house, so we’re hoping that we can make our caravan in Dean’s Park feel like we’re sharing a fantastic day out,” says Danielle.  “Customer feedback suggests that we make the best cupcakes in the city, so we’re excited to be sharing them with even more Minster visitors – let’s just hope that the sun shines so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful setting for their tasty treats.”

Flo will be open daily until 2 November, from 10.00am to 5.00pm.  For more information on visits to York Minster and Dean Park, please visit www.yorkminster.org
