A young trainee priest has been appointed to the role of Curate at York Minster. Ellie Bangay, who is currently studying for an MA in Theology and Ministry at Cranmer Hall, University of Durham, will take up her position at the Minster in July.

Commenting on Ellie’s appointment, The Reverend Canon Michael Smith Pastor at York Minster said:

“We are delighted that part of Ellie’s training for her ordained ministry will be with us here at the Minster.  Whilst the role will be familiar with many parish congregations, it is fairly unusual for a cathedral to have someone in this particular role.

“This is a unique on-the-job training opportunity.  Ellie will learn a great deal about the community, worship and life at the Minster, our work with the wider diocese and the Minster’s role as an internationally renowned tourist destination at the heart of an historic city.  We will, in turn, learn from the valuable insights, opinions and new ideas that Ellie will bring to the Minster.

Ellie will be ordained at York Minster at 10am on Friday 5 July by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, along with 20 other candidates, all of whom will serve as curates within the Diocese of York.  Her post is funded by the Church Commissioners.
