Discover the story of York Minster’s unique First World War memorials and the individual stories of courage and sacrifice by people caught up in the conflict.

Learning Officer Esther Lockwood will explore York Minster’s memorials as well as a selection of personal stories on Tuesday 17 June as part of the cathedral’s four year programme to commemorate the centenary of the conflict.

The talk will include details of the King’s Book of York Heroes, York Minster’s photographic memorial to citizens of York killed in service in the First World War, and the cathedral’s Five Sisters Window, the only national memorial to women of the British Empire who fell during the conflict.

“The story of York Minster and the First World War is one of courage, sacrifice and remembrance,” Esther explains.

“Through my research, I have uncovered inspiring accounts of individuals connected to York Minster. As well as exploring the unique and nationally important memorials in York Minster, this talk will include a selection of these fascinating personal stories.”

Examples include how a community came together to create the King’s Book of York Heroes - a unique memorial to York’s fallen and how a silver wafer box, which is still used in the cathedral during Holy Communion every Sunday, was donated to the Minster in memory of a soldier killed during the conflict.

The talk, which starts at 7pm and is expected to last an hour, is part of the city-wide Festival of Ideas which runs from 12 – 22 June. Tickets for Stories of Remembrance – York Minster during the First World War cost £10 for adults and £7.50 for concessions, and can be purchased from the Box Office via www.yorkminster.org or by calling 01904 557208.
