The Jubilee spirit is set to remain alive and vibrant this summer at York Minster, as the cathedral launches a programme of events and activities that will make domestic visitors proud of their country and heritage, and show visitors from overseas just why Britain is so great!

The ‘Best of British’ programme celebrates art, music, craftsmanship and heritage within the walls and precincts of York Minster. Bunting up the steps of the Central Tower adds an extra jubilee feel, whilst visitors can enjoy one of the best British views when they climb to the top, with views over York and beyond.

“York is one of the country’s top tourist destinations thanks to its amazing architecture, rich history and vibrant city centre, and York Minster has stood at the heart of this beautiful city for centuries – from the top of the Central Tower, visitors can admire the cityscape from the highest point in York with our themed Tower Tours, and this summer, they can meet the stone masons who are working to maintain this architectural gem for future generations,” comments York Minster’s Acting Dean, Rev. Canon Glyn Webster.

Even Dean’s Park will be involved in the Best of British, when film fans will have the chance to vote for which British film will be shown in the grounds on Sunday 22 July in an open-air evening of classic British cinema.

Music will play a large part in the Best of British celebrations with Summer Royal Recitals taking place every Saturday from 28 July to 15 September, featuring a programme of Royal-themed music played on the organ by York Minster’s director of Music, Robert Sharpe, and guest performers including Josef Miltshitzsky.

On 17 August, visitors can also enjoy a concert by folk band The Unthanks and national brass band champions, the Rastrick Brass Band, a unique collaboration between England’s peerless pioneers of folk and a traditional British band.

“Of course, these concerts are just a small part of York Minster’s music; anyone attending any of our sung services will also hear the world-class York Minster choir singing whilst the great organ plays – a spine-tingling experience in its own right,” adds Canon Webster.

The workmanship of British craftsmen will be examined each Saturday at 2.30pm as part of the 8 Wonders, as visitors are taken on a themed tour of York Minster looking at how the number eight has influenced the design and layout of the building, from carvings to stained glass.
