York Minster filled for 'Darkness to Light' Advent Procession

Report this content

There was standing room only at York Minster this evening, as the cathedral marked the first Sunday of Advent with its annual Advent Procession, a service which commences in complete darkness and end with York Minster lit entirely by hundreds of candles.

The new Dean of York, the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, who was installed yesterday (Saturday 1 December) commented: "In the packed Minster tonight, the congregation had the wonderful experience of seeing the light travel from the west to the east, as we began to explore the meaning of Advent and look forward to the coming of Christ in glory."

The services which take place on the First Sunday of Advent mark the start of a busy season for York Minster, which includes what is thought to be the country's largest unrehearsed nativity on Christmas Eve.
