The relationship between science and religion will be the subject of a series of lectures at York Minster during July.

Professor Tom McLeish FRS will discuss his recent book Faith and Wisdom in Science, examining Biblical and ancient texts alongside modern theories of science to challenge traditional ideas of conflict between the two beliefs.

During the three lectures, Professor McLeish, from the Department of Physics at the University of Durham, will make the case for science as a deeply human and ancient activity, embedded in some of the oldest stories told about human desire to understand the natural world.

The Rev Canon Dr Christopher Collingwood, Canon Chancellor at York Minster, said: “We are delighted that Professor McLeish is coming to give these lectures, which will offer a unique insight into the relationship between science and religion, challenging the assumption that the two exist at opposing ends of the spectrum.

“It also helps that he is a wonderfully accessible teacher and communicator, with a capacity to explain science and religion to those who might feel they have little knowledge about either.”

The three lectures will take place at 6.15pm on Wednesdays 8, 15 and 22 July in the Upper Hall of the Old Palace, next to the Minster in Dean’s Park.

Tickets cost £5 per lecture or £12 to attend all three and can be purchased online at www.yorkminster.org or by calling 01904 557208.
