Tim Hone’s first day in his new role as Music and Liturgy Manager at York Minster coincided with one of the most important events in the recent history of the Church of England and the Minster:  the Consecration Service for the 8th Bishop of Stockport, the Reverend Libby Lane – the first woman to be ordained as a Bishop in the Church of England.

Tim has moved to York Minster after holding two concurrent posts:  one based at Church House in Westminster where he worked as Secretary to the Liturgical Commission and National Worship Development Officer and the other based in the Liturgy and Music Department at Salisbury Cathedral a role he had held since 2002.

Before moving to Salisbury, Tim was Director of Music at Newcastle Cathedral for fifteen years and had held posts of Sub-Organist at Coventry Cathedral and Leeds Parish Church.  He was Organ Scholar at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he read music.  During his time in Newcastle he studied for an MA in Liturgy and Music at the University of Leeds, which he was awarded with Distinction.

Tim served as Secretary to the Cathedral Organists’ Association and Cathedrals’ Liturgy and Music Group. He has maintained regular musical activity as an organist, piano accompanist and continuo player.

Commenting on Tim Hone’s new role, the Reverend Canon Peter Moger, Precentor, who has overall responsibility for worship, music and liturgy at the Minster said:

“We are delighted to welcome Tim to York Minster.  One of our key purposes is to inspire people through the story of Jesus Christ, through our worship, prayer and music.  Music and liturgy are at the core of what we do and we know how important it is to get it right for every service, act of worship or performance – no matter how big or small the occasion might be. Tim’s depth and breadth of experience and expertise will be essential in helping us to develop, plan and deliver the department’s programme of work.”

Tim Hone’s appointment strengthens the Minster’s Music Department which includes Director of Music Robert Sharpe, Assistant Director of Music David Pipe, current Organ Scholar George Lacey who joined the Minster last autumn and team secretary Hilary Reynolds.
