All Set for a great Great Yorkshire Show
From tiny ponies to majestic Shires horses, from cutting edge combine harvesters to champion cattle, England’s premier agricultural show is all set to open its gates.
The Great Yorkshire Show begins tomorrow (Tues 14 July) for three days when around 130,000 visitors are expected to attend the countryside extravaganza. Amongst them will be HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall who are special guests on Tuesday when they will meet exhibitors, visitors and staff as they tour the event.
Honorary Show Director Bill Cowling said: “This will be our 157th show and as ever it, it will be the perfect platform for the best of British farming as well as a fun day out for all the family.” It will be a particularly poignant occasion for Bill as he steps down on Thursday evening after ten years in the role. A portrait was unveiled today (Monday) to mark the occasion, which will hang in the President’s Pavilion overlooking the iconic Main Ring.
Around the 250 acre showground on the edge of Harrogate visitors can enjoy an exciting mix of entertainment and awe-inspiring agriculture, including more than 8,000 animals, demonstrations of country skills, couture collections in the fashion shows and culinary delights in the cookery theatre and Food Hall.
Heading the Main Ring programme each day is the Shetland Pony Grand National competition when the Lilliputian ponies and riders go head to head for the coveted top award. And over the three days international riders will have the prestigious Ripon Select foods Cock O’ the North Championship in their sights.
One of the most popular sections is sheep shearing which will host its own version of the Test Match with shearers from England, New Zealand and Wales sharpening their shears for the competition. And for the first time Icelandic shearers will be competing too – in the Open Section.
Also for the first time BBC television’s The One Show will broadcast live from the showground on Wednesday evening. Plus a film crew from the legendary children’s TV programme, Blue Peter, will be recording the sights and sounds of the event.
