Breakfast on the Menu at the Great Yorkshire Showground

A choice of bacon sandwiches, fruit smoothies, cereals and sausages were on the menu for around 100 youngsters at the Great Yorkshire Showground today (Monday 28 Jan). Children from Starbeck Community Primary School, Harrogate were the breakfast guests of the organisers, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society at the event to highlight the important role British farmers play in producing our food.

Before tucking in, the children took part in a series of workshops and demonstrations looking at the provenance of food. Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Sally Pitts said: “Children don’t eat breakfast as often as they once did so this event has been excellent at showing the importance of starting the day with good healthy food. It’s been fun as well as educational.”

Workshops were run by Hazel Brow Farm, Richmond who explained butter making, milk and egg production, Daniel Cartwright of Show Off Chefs who made fruit smoothies, and York farmer, Grant Burton who demonstrated sausage making. The breakfast was cooked by members of Ladies in Pigs, which supports the British pig farming industry.

The initiative was part of the annual national initiative, Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society is best known as the organiser of the annual Great Yorkshire Show, England’s premier agricultural show, and its sister event, Countryside Live.
